Window Renovations and You: Finding the Right Styles for Your Home

Renovating your home is always an exciting prospect. However, if you’re replacing your old windows, it can be difficult to distinguish between the different types and styles; certain styles work better for one type of home over others. Given how significant an investment this is in time and money, it’s essential to make sure you find the right windows for you.

Casemate

If you have tall, narrow openings, then casemate windows work best. These attach to the frame’s side by one or more hinges and swing outwards and open or close via a crank, lever, or handle. Commonly used in pairs, variants include top-hinged awning windows and bottom-hinged hopper windows.

If you’re looking for improved ventilation, casemate windows work wonders due to their ability to open completely, letting more air pass through.

Bay and Bow Windows

Both bay and bow windows are beautiful additions to any house, capable of becoming focal points both inside and out.

Bay windows are a combination of three or more windows, which angle outside the exterior wall; this creates a bay-like space inside the corresponding room. This helps introduces more light compared to a window that’s flush to the wall.

Meanwhile, bow windows also extend beyond the house’s exterior wall but instead sweep away from it into an arch of around four to six windows. This arrangement is typically larger than bay windows and has more glass area thanks to the curve.

Bay vs. Bow

While both styles work for large spaces within a room, it can be hard to choose between bay and bow windows. Here are some more differences between the two to help you decide:

  • Bay windows overall consist of two regular and one picture window, while bow windows are completely curved and create an exterior rounded appearance.
  • Bay windows protrude further out into the exterior, which adds more interior floor space.
  • Bow windows are wider than bays as the latter generally only has three panels.
  • Bow windows can wrap around building corners, forming an exterior turret shape.
