What Are The Differences between Window Tint Film and Coating?

One of the main things that homeowners look for in replacement windows for their homes is energy efficiency. The low emissivity coating and insulation are just some things that help make your windows more energy efficient. However, this should not be confused with window tint film and coating.

In the following, we will discuss the differences between window film, window tinting, and window coating to help you decide which is best for your window replacement in Toronto.

Primary Differences between Window Tint Film and Window Coating

Window Coating

If your primary concern is to reduce your energy bills, low-E window coatings would be a better choice than window tinting film. These windows are manufactured with a thin covering of metal particles that cover the surface of the glass to increase solar gain, prevent heat loss, and provide a clear outside view no matter what the weather outside is.

Due to the high demand for energy efficient windows, the majority of today’s windows come equipped with low-E coatings. We recommend low-E coatings for homes that have windows facing the west, east, and south, as they tend to get the most amount of natural light in the daytime.

If you are going with low-E coatings on your windows, you should also opt for double or triple pane windows, which allow for the addition of an extra layer of low-E on the added panes. Besides, they can be filled with inert gases in between each pane for added energy efficiency. As a bonus, they will help reduce the amount of condensation that forms on your windows.

Window Tint

For those whose main concern is to reduce the amount of ultraviolet light that penetrates through their windows, tinted windows are the best option. However, the glass surface of tinted windows can overheat easily, as they absorb a vast amount of sunlight. This can lead to cracks in the window glass. Moreover, tinted windows can reduce energy efficiency of the windows.

Window tints are not ideal for those who live in colder climates, as they do not retain warm air. They are great for keeping your home cool in the summer but are counterproductive during the bitter cold winter months we are used to here in Toronto. They are a great source of privacy but not ideal for those who want energy efficient windows.

Window Film

As opposed to tinted windows, window film reflects UV radiation away from your home instead of absorbing it. Thus, they do not overheat, as tinted windows do. The inside coating helps to reduce heat loss conduction keeping your home much warmer in the cooler months. They are far more superior compared to window tints if you are looking for energy efficient replacement windows.

A disadvantage of window films is that they not only reduce the amount of natural light, they also reduce the level of visibility. If you are a fan of natural light, they are not the ideal choice. With this option, you will have to rely more on artificial lighting to light up your home.
