How to Tell When Condensation on Windows is Bad

With winter approaching, temperatures will start to drop. This means that ice, frost, and other forms of condensation on windows could be an issue for many Toronto residents. While frost on windows may look pretty, it can cause many issues.

Read ahead for some reasons as to why window condensation is not a good thing. In order to prevent condensation from forming, you may wish to replace windows in Toronto.

Facts About Condensation on Windows

How Does Condensation on Windows Form

Condensation occurs when the moisture in warm air changes into a liquid once it comes in contact with a colder surface. This includes your window panes.

The temperature at which this occurs is also known as the dew point. Keep in mind that warmer air contains more moisture than colder air. Thus, as the air in your home becomes cooler, the level of moisture in the air condenses. So of course once temperatures begin to drop outside, condensation will in fact form on your windows.

However, whether condensation on windows will occur in your home depends on many factors such as the actual windows, how they were installed, the placement of heat sources in your home, and interior window treatments such as blinds or curtains.

Obviously, windows that are more energy efficient are less likely to form condensation. However, installing new windows take time to adjust to your home so some condensation will occur. This is due to the fact that newer windows are designed to not let warm air escape and cold air enter your home during the cold months of winter. The advantage of this is that your home will remain at a more consistent temperature and your energy bills will decrease dramatically.

When Condensation on Windows is Bad

Condensation on inside windows is a sign that you might need to replace or repair your windows. This occurs when you start to notice condensation on the inside of your window panes. If you rub your finger along your window pane and the condensation wipes away, this is not a warning sign. However, if it does not go away, there is a chance that it is inside the windowpane.

This is a bad sign as it means that the window unit needs to be replaced. As insulated glass windows are often filled with inert gases, this is a sign that they may be leaking. These gases are an excellent source of insulation but once they start to leak, they are no longer effective. Thus, it might be time for window replacement.

If you are starting to notice higher amounts of condensation on windows in any room of your house, it could be a sign that you need to replace your windows. Today’s windows are more energy-efficient, so they will help maintain a more consistent year-round temperature as well as reduce the amount of condensation on your windows. As well, they are very durable and will last for many years.
